Chris Roberts and other devs have always maintained that they want VR to be a thing. Luckily for us, some CIG devs are really passionate about VR as well and they added official support in Sep 2025 with the Alpha 4.5 PTU release. Before that, we had unofficial workarounds using wonky third party software.
But now I have been using VR mode for the game with official support and the experience is so much better.
Space sims have always been AMAZING in VR. Elite looks absolutely stunning. In terms of ambience, atmosphere and the wow-factor, no terrestrial game can come close to the awesomeness of space. And now, finally, we have that in Star Citizen.
Best VR Headsets for Star Citizen
I have been VR simming since 2016 when the HTC Vive first dropped. I have tested dozens of VR headsets since then and for space and flight sims, it all boils down to a couple of things:
- Essential: High resolution/ clarity to see the HHUD clearly
- Essential: Comfortable on your head for extended periods but since you are seated, it doesn’t have to be super feather light
- Preferable: Good colours and especially blacks for space sims
- Preferable: Good FoV for immersion
Based on this criteria, here are the headsets I end up using the most.

The Pimax Crystal Super offers unmatched resolution but you will need a pretty powerful PC to run it. Its my go-to for all space and flight sims. The best part is that you can get it with the OLED module which makes blacks more awesome and there is definitely a lot of black in space sims.
Pimax has been consistently improving over the years and the headsets have become lighter with higher resolution, clarity and FoV. If you want a no-compromise headset, this is it.
The most impressive feature of the Pimax is the resolution and field of view. It has the widest FoV of any headset out there, bar none. I cant put into words how useful this is in both flight and racing sims. The ability to see your gauges or objects in your peripheral vision without having to twist your neck is a godsend. It’s a big bump in immersion. The main difference between the Pimax Crystal Light and Pimax Crystal Super is that the latter has Dynamic Foveated Rendering and slightly higher resolution.

I am honestly a bit surprised by the Quest 3. That they managed to pack a quality headset with a decently high resolution at such an amazing price point is nothing short of astonishing. Maybe they have enough sales volume that they can reduce their production cost this much? Either way, its a great opportunity for consumers to get started with VR at a respectable price point. And what you get for the price is pretty good.
The resolution is the most important stat for sims so lets start there. It is significantly better than previous Oculus headsets including the Rift S. Screen Door Effect is pretty much gone and text, menu dials are crisp and readable. FoV and sweet spot are decent. Tracking, controllers, audio etc. are all acceptable. The headset is definitely more comfortable than previous offerings and the adjustable IPD is a big plus for some people.
Overall, I think this is the best you can get at this price range.

The Pimax Crystal Light is amazing value. I am still shocked by how just how much they managed to pack into such a reasonably priced package.
The headset offers a massive 130 degree FoV which is amazing for situational awareness. The refresh rate can be set based on your PC specs – 72Hz for low end PC and all the way to 120 Hz for people rocking Nvidia 4090/ 5090. This is a true enthusiast product.
