I get a ton of questions about Star Citizen from readers and I have compiled the most common ones here. I will keep adding to this list and updating the answers as things change. Its important to remember that SC is still in development, so it doesn’t have a great tutorial and mechanics keep changing. But the game has a great community and you should feel free to ask questions.

Is Star Citizen worth buying?
Yes, I think it is. Remember than you can buy a starter pack for about $45 (use this link/ code to get some extra starting in-game currency) and just earn everything else in the game. Read my complete state-of-the-game review to learn more.
Do ships in Star Citizen cost real money?
You can purchase ships with real money or in-game currency. It’s sort of like kickstart. Those with extra passion choose to fund the game with extra money and get some toys to play with as a reward. The vast majority of these ships can be earned in-game as well. You don’t need to spend any money beyond a starter pack and you shouldn’t really do that unless you want to support the game more.
Will star citizen ever be released?
“Release” doesn’t really mean what it used to. I played Factorio for hundreds of hours before it was ever released. We are in an era of continuous development and I personally prefer this model to releasing a new Call of Duty or Assassin’s Creed every 1-2 years.
Is Star Citizen playable now?
Star Citizen has been playable since 2014-2015. I played the hell out of it in 2015 and I believe I got my money’s worth back then itself. You had a mode called Aerna Commander where you fought against AI enemies. It was pretty fun.
We have come a long way since then and you can do a lot more in the game now. There are dozens of planets and moons and more are being added each year. Trading, mining, bounty hunting etc. are already possible, although they are still in alpha state. Yes, the game is buggy but it is still better than about 80% of the AAA games out there IMO.
Why is Star Citizen so expensive?
It really isn’t. You can get a starter package for $45. Or a better package for maybe $60-$80. You don’t really need to spend beyond that unless you are a fan.
Can I play Star Citizen for free?
There are free fly events that happen from time to time. You can get a feel for the game during these events, but you have to buy a starter package eventually.
How much does it cost to play Star Citizen?
Just a $45 starter pack. Plus a decent PC to run it. Here are the best starter packs and ships:
Can you play Star Citizen without a starter pack?

Will Star Citizen be pay to win?
Not really. You can buy a lot of stuff with real money in Star Citizen but you don’t have to. Ships, ship skins, armour, weapons etc. can be bought for real money or it can be bought for in-game money. Most of the stuff (except some big ships) is so cheap to buy in the game, that you have no real reason to spend real money on it.
Can my computer run Star Citizen?
Star Citizen is a demanding game, but right now the bottleneck is on the server side. Most games are optimized closer to release and SC is not nearing release so devs can’t spend time optimizing it. If they did, they would have to do it all over again as more and more game mechanics come online. What this means is that right now, you need a decent PC to run SC at an appreciable frame rate. It’s a high-fidelity game and it will always be a bit demanding.
Make sure you have 32 GB RAM, a good multi-core processor since SC does use multi-core unlike most other games, and a high-end GPU. Here’s my list of the best option:
What is the most expensive ship in Star Citizen?
The most expensive player ownable ship is the Aegis Javelin which can be had for $3000. But it has a crew requirement of 80 which means it’s not really a good idea to buy it on your own. Its mostly meant as an org ship to be operated and maintained by large orgs.
Can you buy ships with in game money Star Citizen?
Yes, that’s the whole idea! Almost every ship that is flyable can be bought with in game money. The big ones are expensive, but some of the smaller ones are cheap enough that you should be able to afford them after a single day of gameplay. Oh and you don’t even have to outright buy them, there is also the option to rent them by paying a daily fee. This can be a good idea because you can rent a good money-making ship like the prospector miner and use it to make a lot of cash in just one day. And use that cash to buy whatever ships you want.
How many planets are in Star Citizen?
The game universe is supposed to have 100-star systems. Each star system can have any number of planets, so expect several hundred planets. Additionally, each planet has a lot of moons as well so you will definitely have 1000s of astral bodies in the game.
However, currently we have only 1 star system with 4 planets and a dozen+ moons. These moons and planets are so detailed and well done, that this one system itself feels massive.
Can you land on planets in Star Citizen?
Yes, its possible to land on planets as well as moons. It is quite fun actually as plants and moons have a lot of interesting terrain including rivers, mountains, trees, valleys, proper caves etc.
How big is Star Citizen install?
The current install is about 65 GB. It may increase with time as more content is added.
How do you get around planets in Star Citizen?
You can use both space ships to fly around and ground vehicles to drive around planets. If the distance is large, it is better to fly into space, then use quantum travel (high speed travel) to fly to the other side of the planet and then renter the atmosphere.
